  • Requirements

You need to have basic knowledge of both 3ds max and Vray to follow along with this tutorial.

  • Chapter 1

In this part, you will learn how to set up exterior lighting and sky using the maxscript findandbind. We used “Industrial Sunset” HDRI from HDRI Haven and bound it to the sun to add realistic warm sunlight to the scene.

Download “Industrial Sunset” HDRI from here.

You can find the findandbind script in our post "Top 3ds Max Scripts for Architecture Visualization"

  • Chapter 2

Secondly, this part is all about materials. Some materials we will make from scratch, some will be PBR materials, and we will also use the powerful material library that comes with Vray 5.

You will learn all the techniques, tips, and tricks you need to create realistic professional-looking materials.

  • Chapter 3

In this part, you’ll learn an advanced technique that will make your materials look a little worn out and realistic. We will use the example of the wooden deck material to demonstrate how to use the Multi/Sub-Object material to randomize the wood planks' color and saturation.

In this part, we used the “Material Texture Loader” script. If you don’t have this script, you can follow this tutorial: How to manually load PBR Textures into V-ray

  • Chapter 4:

After that, we will add the interior lighting and adjust it to go with the same sunset mood that we created outside.

  • Chapter 5:

In this part, we will use the Forest Pack plug-in to add grass to the scene. The plug-in will scatter the grass across the lawn and randomize the size and rotation of each strand.

  • Chapter 6:

In this part, we will start furnishing the house interior and add curtains to the windows.

  • Chapter 7:

Then, we will start working on the scene background and foreground using different landscape elements and a copy of the house building. This will add more depth to the shots and create the surrounding environment.

  •  Chapter 8:

Finally, you will learn how to adjust the environment and add atmospheric effects.

We will use the “Sunset in the Chalk Quarry” HDRI from HDRI haven then add the VRay AerialPerspective to create fog and a hazy atmosphere.
